Rex King Captures Eriez BRP/Hoosier Tire Modified Tour ‘07 Victory

Rex Kings takes the quadruple checkers from Spanky HallDefending BRP/Hoosier Race Tire Modified Tour champion Rex King captured his first Series feature event of 2007 on Sunday, August 26th at Bobby Rohrer’s Eriez Speedway.

King and Rick Hall led the 21 car field to the starter’s tower for the 35 lap event with Hall beating King to the first turn to grab the lead. King persevered and was able to maneuver by Hall to take control on lap two. King then warded off Hall’s challenges until a lap seven caution for the stopped car of Gary Rankin. Just one lap later the caution flew again as Mike Turner and Rex King Jr. tangled at the flag stand. Both drivers were able to continue however, the caution was exactly what Hall needed to wrestle the lead away from the elder King. Hall led the next two circuits until the event’s third caution flew when Del Rougeux Jr. looped his ride in turn two. This caution placed King on Hall’s rear bumper and when the green flag flew King quickly regained the lead.

Modified Tour stars salute the crowd in their 4-wide parade lap King and Hall continued to battle for the lead during the next 24 green flag laps until the event’s fifth caution flew on lap 25 when Rougeux once again spun his mount for the second time in the evening. The ensuing restart found ninth place starter Kevin Bolland joining King and Hall in the battle for the lead. The event was then slowed for the final time on lap 28 when Kevin Hoffman slowed on the backstretch.

The feature’s final seven laps found King leading the trio with Hall and Bolland battling each other for the runner-up position. When flagman Spanky Hall’s four checkered flags were unfurled it was the elder King picking up a very overdue Tour feature win. Hall, who captured the Series’ first event at the Erie, PA oval in 2001, held on for the second place position over Bolland. Russell King, who started eleventh, methodically worked his way through the field for a fine fourth place finish and Jackson Center, PA driver, Skip Moore, also had his best Series finish of 2007 as he rounded out the top five. Chris Schiffer, Jeremy Paup, Carl Murdick, Lenny Leibold Jr., and Jeremiah Shingledecker completed the top ten.

The BRP/Hoosier Race Tires Modified Tour 07 will return to the Eriez Speedway for the first time since 2000 on Sunday, August 26th. Erie, PA business owner Bobby Rohrer recently purchased the facility and much work has been done to the speedway and its grounds since Grove City driver Rick Hall captured his only Modified Tour victory when the series visited the facility seven years ago.

As the BRP/Hoosier Race Tire Modified Tour ’07 heads into its final two events New York star Ron Smoker continues to hold a slim points lead over teenage star Russell King. Smoker was victorious when the Tour visited the Central PA Speedway on July 3rd while King captured the Series’ opening event at the Tri-City Speedway on May 27th as well as the event at the Expo Speedway on July 12th. “Revin” Kevin Bolland of New Brighton, PA is also a two time winner in Tour action this year as he was victorious in the event that was held on the Lernerville Speedway on June 1st as well as the Series’ inaugural visit to the Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, WV that was held on July 28th. Del Rougeux Jr. currently holds down the third place position in the point standings. Defending Sharon Speedway Modified Champion Brian Swartzlander and the 2005 and 2006 Modified Tour Champion Rex King complete the top five.

In addition to the drivers listed above “Mr. Consistency” Dave Murdick would certainly enjoy bringing home the victory from the Erie, PA facility and race fans cannot count out Polk, PA driver Jeremiah Shingledecker who is still in search of his first BRP/Hoosier Race Tire Modified Tour victory.

Gates are scheduled to open at 4:30 with the first green flag to wave at 6:00. To get to the Eriez Speedway take Interstate 90, to Exit 29 ( Rte 8 ). Go south on Rte 8 approximately 2.5 miles towards Hammett, Pa to Tate Rd. Turn right onto Tate Rd and follow until the “T” intersection. At the “T” turn left onto Lake Pleasant.
