  • BRACHMAN ROLLS TO MODIFIED TOUR WIN AT PPMS

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, Imperial, PA; September 16, 2011: Chad Brachman made a successful debut with the BRP/Hoosier Tire Modified Tour during the Tri-Star Pittsburgher presented by Cintas. The Sanborn, NY driver chased down early leader and four-time series champion Rex King, Sr. to claim the win. What makes the accomplishment all the more remarkable is that Brachman had never raced on Dirt’s Monster Half Mile before, and that his car was powered by a 358 cubic inch engine.

Brachman was in awe of the place at first. “We really didn’t know what to expect here, we’ve never been here before. All that I could do was to look at pictures on the computer, and come here with a baseline set-up.” After a disappointing performance in his heat race, Brachman and his team made a number of changes. “They seemed to be the right ones,” he said with a laugh.

The luck of the draw put King Sr. on the pole and perennial PPMS favorite Kevin Bolland in fourth. Brachman lined up in seventh, and he knew that he had his work cut out for him. As expected, King Sr. jumped out to the early lead, with Bolland close behind. But it was Brachman who was already at work, moving into third on the second lap of the event. Brachman slipped by Bolland on lap four and set out after the the leader.

By lap seven, King Sr. had caught the rear of the field. As he started to lap some of the cars, Brachman was closing in. In just three short laps, Brachman was on the tail of the racer that he called “the granddaddy of the BRP.” They then raced side by side for a couple of laps.

Brachman dipped to the low side coming through turn four and grabbed the lead away from King Sr. on lap 12.

With Brachman and King still leading the way, near the halfway mark, a fierce battle broke out for positions within the top ten. the most intense conflict involved Brad Rapp, Kevin Bolland and another New York invader, Randy Chrysler. This came to a halt when Bolland pulled to the high side of the speedway with a flat tire on lap 28.

Bolland’s misfortune set up a two lap dash for the cash. Brachman broke away from the pack, and led the field to the white flag. With about half of the field taking the white, the yellow light flashed on again for a three car tangle involving Bolland, Kevin Hoffman and Shawn Fleeger. This time, Hoffman came up with the flat and he retired to the pits.

That set up another two lap dash. Brachman again broke out in the lead, but this time Chrysler was pressing King Sr. for second. and, behind them, clusters of cars were fighting for position.

At the checkers, King was the meat in a New York sandwich, with Brachman taking first and Chrysler third. Rapp held on for fourth and Jeremiah Shingledecker crossed in fifth.

Shannon Whaley led the next group across the finish line in sixth. Rex King, Jr. used the restarts to climb into the top ten. Positions eight, nine and ten went to Chad Homan, who was making his return to the Modified Tour, Mark Flick and sophomore Chris Haines.

For his career first series win, Brachman received the R2C Performance award. The Landrum Spring racer of the race was Randy Chrysler, who advanced from tenth to third with his 358 Modified.

Rod End Supply heat race wins for the 23 car field went to Bolland, King Sr., and Chrysler.

There was no B Main and no provisionals were claimed.

Rex King Jr. Tops Dad for First Modified Tour Victory!

The BRP/Hoosier Tire Modified Tour race was named in honor of Debbie Oyler, a former Board Member and former track employee. She passed before the 2011 season got underway.

With many of her friends and family looking on, Rex “Cooter” King, Jr. and Kevin Bolland led the 27 car starting field to the green flag for the
start of the 30-lap Debbie Oyler Memorial Modified Tour event. At the drop of the green flag, Cooter King jumped into the lead with his father, Rex King, Sr., right on his rear bumper.

Coming past the start finish line, both Kings were running side by side but Cooter had just a little bit of advantage to take the lead. On lap
four, the first of several caution flags waved. John Buchanan and Tommy Mattocks retired from the event with damage to their mounts.

On the restart, both Kings started side by side with Cooter chosing the outside. He was able to pull away once again and by lap eight he had
a six car length advantage over his father. By lap seventeen the leaders started working lapped traffic, with Cooter maintaing his advantage.

On lap 21, it appeared as though Rex King, Sr. would lose second place, as he came into contact with a lapped car, but the caution flag waived for Shawn Fleeger instead.

Cooter once again chose the outside for the restart and he used the high side of the speedway to drive away from his father. His lead vanished once again when the red flag was displayed on lap 26 for Ron Eperthener, who had the transmission break and the parts of the driveline hit the back of his legs. He was checked out by ambulance personnel and later released from their care.

The final restart of the night found Cooter with the advantage. But now Rex King, Sr. with his hands full with Eric Gabany, who had started in the sixteenth starting position. Gabany had been carefully working his way to the front of the field and pressured King, Sr. the final four laps.

Cooter King went on to pick up the checkers, his third overall, as he claimed his first pair of wins at another area speedway. Rex King, Sr. finished second, with Eric Gabany in a close third. Fourth place went to Brian Weaver and Frank Guidace rounded out the top five.

Interestingly, Gabany and Guidace also finished in the top five earlier in the season with their Approved Toilet Rentals 358 Modifieds.
Six place went to Jeremiah Shingledecker, who started twenty-seventh. Seventh through tenth went to Kevin Bolland, Kevin Hoffman, Brad Rapp and Rick Hall.

Cooter King received a special award from R2C Performance for his first Modified Tour win, while Jeremiah Shingledecker picked up the Landrum Spring Racer of the Race prize.
